Friday evening at the DYNAFIT Speed Factory. People standing around with expressions ranging from quiet confidence to tax return. Headlamps already on, shining with the kind of conviction that suggests everyone is personally ready to take over race control if needed.
Then the gun goes.
Köglhörndl, Hundsalmjoch, Ascherjöchl, Plessenberg. The early climbs have a certain brutal honesty to them. Up there, questions that normally cost 150 euros an hour just sort of answer themselves. What holds us together? When does it get better? Later. Maybe.
Heuberg, Kienberg, Burgstein bring on the classic mid-race sensation: "Actually, this is going well." Sometimes it is. Usually it's the altitude talking. But it feels exactly the same either way, so who's counting.
Then the race drops the politeness.
Großer Traithen, Unterbergjoch, Steilnerjoch, Schwarzenberg. These four aren't asking how you're doing. They want to know why you're here. It hurts. You're also weirdly proud. Both things are true at the same time and neither one helps.
Oberaudorf. The finish. An involuntary "okay, fair enough" and you're done.
104 kilometres. 5,900 metres of gain. OTF100 is not just an ultra. It's a character selection with dark humor and surprisingly good prospects.
